Thousands of talented, ambitious and in some cases deluded contestants paraded past the three judges, who worked together as a majority rules selection panel. Contenders will now audition for one of three categories - solo artists 16-24, solo artists 25 plus, and vocal groups. Of the thousands of hopefuls, only 30 contestants will be chosen in each of the three categories. This episode's auditions were from Melbourne.

After surviving the rigours of Boot Camp, the judges will take their respective group of five contestants to their home for some intense one on one mentoring and to give the contestants a taste of what their future lifestyle could be. At the end of this, each judge will have to make the tough choice of eliminating two further contestants, leaving just three finalists in each category to perform at the live shows.
