Maloney wakes up hungover under the wrong office desk. In his hands, he clutches a blood-stained knife. Yet he was the one assigned to provide personal protection for a businessman at the party the night before. The police officer, overcome with glee, has no doubt: Maloney is the murderer and arrests him.

In his latest case, Maloney finds himself in a spooky apartment building. Bodies appear in the elevator, and then vanish just as quickly. Is Maloney's client mentally unstable, or are supernatural forces at work in the building?

Mrs. Thaler has joined the group "The Last Day," which is preparing for the apocalypse. This displeases her daughter, who suspects a scam. Maloney, who is supposed to rescue her mother from the clutches of the doomsday guru in the woods, soon stumbles upon a "wrecked" corpse.

When, unexpectedly, not his paranoid client but the accused dies, Maloney uncovers jealous rivalries, vicious intrigues and eccentric personalities hidden beneath the surface of everyday life at the retirement home.
