Homer Radcliffe, a bill for his taxes, he challenges Clay to collect back taxes from a group of outlaws who are occupying different hideouts far from Tombstone but within the county. Clay uses the services of Curly Bill Brocius as his deputy and guide.

On a two day stagecoach ride to Larrabee, Hollister, two men and a woman stop overnight at a hotel. Next day, one of the men kills the stagecoach driver to stop a warrant being delivered, but realizes his big mistake too late.

October 16, 1882 - President Chester Arthur has sent Ferguson from Washington, D.C. to investigate crime in Tombstone. Elizabeth Blythe, a newspaper reporter from New York, has come with him. Ed Chandler and his gang kidnap both of them to try to force Clay to release Ed's brother, Joe, from jail. Ferguson and Blythe learn that "wherever there's sudden wealth, there's sudden death". "There's always crime and lawlessness in a boom town.

Soon after getting off the stage, they visit an old friend and associate Aaron McCafin and take possession of his Double T ranch. George hatches a plan to invite Sheriff Hollister out for Sunday lunch, and while he's being entertained by Patricia, George slips into town and robs the bank.

Pop Tuttle wants Benson to be the county seat because, unlike Tombstone, they have plenty of water. Meanwhile, some of the citizens of Tombstone realize they must raise money to purchase a steam pump because a year earlier, in 1881, a fire almost wiped out all of Tombstone. Then in July, 1882, Tombstone does suffer its second worst fire.

June 8, 1883 - Horn and Hugh Burnett have stolen $8,000 from the Tombstone bank. They give $3,000 to Will Gunther in exchange for food and hiding them in the lower level of his barn. Will fears that his wife, Viola, will leave him for Hugh Burnett, so he kills Hugh. However, Viola leaves her husband, Will, to join Horn Burnett.

Sheriff Clay Hollister permits the small group to resupply but insists they move out of the territory. Finding the fatally wounded Santiago and his men held up in a cave just outside town, Hollister agrees to bring Santiago's younger brother to him before he dies. What Hollister doesn't realize is that Santiago's brother is not who he seems to be.

After setting their trap, Colby rides into Tombstone to purchase as much ammunition as he can and comes into contact with Harris Claibourne and his former fiancé Sarah Medford. Colby's violent actions bring him to the attention of Sheriff Clay Hollister who has serious concerns about Colby and the real reasons behind his visit.
