The West Yorkshire motorway police are not easily surprised or shocked by what they come across on Britain's busiest roads, but when a drunk student in Leeds flags down PCs Dale Anderson and Mick McQuade asking for a lift to France, the two cops quickly realise they have an unusual problem on their hands.

Sometimes being in the right place at the right time can lead to some surprising results.

PCs Griffiths and Toal are involved in a high-speed chase which takes them into Birmingham city centre, and PC Richard Elliot is called to a lorry park off the M6 where a gang has been disturbed while attempting to steal the load from the back of a lorry. Also, more than 20 motorway cops, a dog team and the West Midlands Police helicopter are involved in an operation to stop a gang involved in a cash-in-transit robbery.

Officers from the Central Motorway Police Group target cable thieves, a crime that is costing the country more than £1 billion each year and causing chaos to Britain's transport system.

The Motorway Cops catch up with the drivers who try to cheat the system, taking chances even though that may mean putting other people's lives at risk - and they find that the drivers who do this are often those they come across time and time again.

Amid icy conditions, the Motorway Cops are forced to close the motorway.

At night, a lorry jack-knifes on an unlit section of the M6, and two cars have ploughed full-speed into the underside of its trailer. The roofs of both cars have been taken off in the impact, and one man is dead. But, miraculously, three others have survived. It's up to PCs Elliot, Bullard and Shail to find out if this was simply the hand of fate or if someone is to blame.

The Motorway Cops come face-to-face with their worst nightmare as they are called to detain two women who are caught walking on the M6 motorway. As the PCs arrive the women make a run for it, into the path of a 44 tonne lorry. The accident forces a total closure of the M6 leaving motorists stranded in a 15 mile traffic jam and the cops locked in a life or death battle to save the injured women.

The Motorway Cops help stop a stolen lorry on the rampage in the city centre. Elsewhere it's guile which catches people who are economical with the truth.

A jack-knifed lorry causes a tailback on the A1 motorway leading to an accident between two lorries, leaving a man dead and forcing the motorway cops to shut the road while they investigate.

Britain's motorways are getting busier and with fewer officers on the road the motorway cops often need the public to tip them off about illegal cars and drivers

The Motorway Cops are after runaway drivers including a stolen high performance car with a determined thief at the wheel. The thief is so determined that he risks a head-on crash as he drives the wrong way down the motorway, leaving the cops to launch a city-wide search for him.

The motorway cops are faced with organised criminal gangs from overseas who use Britain's motorways to travel up and down the country, from city to city, stealing to order. The problem is that, when the police stop them, the criminals claim not to understand a word of English, making the investigation tougher than ever.

Despite the array of sophisticated equipment and computer data available to the Motorway Cops, it is often experience and a 'sixth sense' which allows them to sniff out those motorists who have something to hide - and when they do, the police often uncover much more than they expect.
