A pair of angels move to York and set up a legal practice to help humans in trouble. Their first case sees them try and prove the innocence of a man accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend on her wedding day.

A six-year-old asks Zak and Tom to intervene in a custody battle between his adoptive parents, but they find themselves facing Hannah and Richard when the case goes to court. Meanwhile, a mysterious package from Mr Mountjoy arrives at the Belfry, containing a grim relic of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Zak and Tom defend an 82-year-old man accused of poisoning the owner of his care home and end up taking him to stay at the Belfry while the trial is on. Zak continues to be tormented by his feelings for Hannah, while Tom has a night on the town - much to Mrs Sheringham's disapproval.

A whole community unites behind a single mother on trial for the stabbing of her alleged stalker - but Tom feels that there is more to this lonely and bereaved woman's story.

Mrs Sheringham is tortured by memories of Billy. Zak and Hannah defend a young female soldier in a court martial, and Zak watches while Hannah gets closer to Major John Parker.

Mrs Sheringham is tempted by an offer to leave York, and Hannah has a decision to make. Meanwhile, Zak and Tom defend a man accused of murdering his brother. The man protests his innocence and as the angels strive to uncover what once bound the Hale brothers, they go head-on into battle with Richard, who has significantly raised his game.
