The situation intensifies when he begins to haemorrhage internally and Mitch doesn't think he can stop the bleeding. Two high school friends end up on the ward after mixing an ecstasy tablet with too much booze at their high-school reunion. Following Steph's funeral, Steph's mother returns to Ward 17 to see where her daughter worked and becomes involved with the staff and patients. Meanwhile, Luke bonds with a young woman with Downs Syndrome, and Bron grows concerned for Ben when she see how he is coping with Steph's death.

Having responded to the scene of Sophie's car accident, Ben is having difficulty coming to terms with the aftermath of treating people he knows. Sophie and her children have survived the head-on collision resulting from her impaired driving but her friends are even more shocked when her desperate actions the night before come to light. Refusing to lose custody of her children to the man who raised her husband, Sophie confronts her father-in-law from her hospital bed putting Terri and Peter in the middle of a siege situation that will change eveyone's life. Meanwhile, Bron's fundraising netball game disintegrates when some personal agendas come into play on the court and Von's New Year's resolution seems destined to go up in smoke. A comment in the OR results in a nurse filing a report against Luke for negligence.

The 1998 season finale is packed with emotion when Ward 17 celebrates Christmas. A sick child hopes that her Christmas wish will come true; an elderly man asks Santa for a special gift for his ailing wife; Von learns the true meaning of Christmas; a homeless man goes to great lengths to stay in All Saints for Christmas dinner and Bron is in for a surprise at the Ward 17 Christmas party. Sophie is faced with the possibility of losing custody of her children to her father-in-law. Connor has decided it is finally time to tell Bron how he feels while Jared and Jaz receive test results.

Steph's life is on the line when she and two patients contract a rare disease. Luke is forced to question his abilities as a doctor when faced with an ungrateful patient. After getting trapped in a collapsed building, Ben shocks Bron by declaring he's falling in love with her. Von and Dr. Samantha O'Hara help an elderly doctor realise it's time to retire gracefully.

Terri is forced to nurse reluctant patient Bryan Taylor, a man who has been told that he will develop Huntingdon's Disease and who is determined to commit suicide. He is admitted to Ward 17 having overdosed on a slow-acting drug and has legal papers to say he is not to be resuscitated. Knowing there is still a chance to counteract the drug, Terri hopes to understand the man's motivations and hopefully convince him to change his mind. Bron and Ben form a close bond after becoming caught in a siege at a drug lab. Connor and Jared clash over the conflicting needs of two patients.

The husband of an old friend of Steph's is admitted with an inoperable brain tumour. His wife is barely coping with the strain and it seems a blessing when he slips into a coma. Steph soon faces a moral dilemma when she suspects her friend of performing euthanasia on her dying husband. Bron returns to the Ward for a shift as an agency nurse and her exciting stories as an ambo soon wear thin with the others. Jaz finds an unexpected ally in her struggle to see Danny brought to justice. Peter is troubled by thoughts of who received his late wife's organs.

Jaz is still trying to come to terms with her date rape and has a tense moment with Jared after she makes a mistake on the ward. It falls to Terri to tell the staff what happened and Ward 17 reels from the consequences when they learn about Jaz's ordeal. Peter helps Jaz begin to cope with the trauma she has been through while Bron shows her a direct way of dealing with the situation and Connor decides to get revenge on Jaz's behalf. Von is ashamed to realise her prejudices towards an overweight patient while Ben and Bron discover their elderly patient isn't at all what she appears to be.

Ben pushes himself to the limit when he and Bron try to rescue a woman trapped in a twisted car wreck. Connor learns a lesson in prejudice when he looks after a schizophrenic patient. Jaz tries to come to terms with the fact she was date-raped by Danny.

Initially offered a high-profile job at another hospital, Luke's standing with the specialist quickly changes as she denies any responsibility the misdiagnosis of a patient. Jared ignores his instincts and, following the directions of an intern, botches the treatment of a patient resulting in a report being filed against him by the doctor. On his first day with Rapid Response, Ben has a knife pulled on him by a gang member as he tries to attend to the victim of a stabbing. Later in hospital, the man warns Ben that his interference has made him a target for retaliation. A difficult patient gets physical with Stephanie and Jared's birthday surprise doesn't go over well with Terri.

A young woman is in hospital with a serious bacterial infection six weeks after the birth of her first child. She goes into cardiac arrest has a near death experience. Jaz helps three elderly ladies feel worthwhile and Von brings out the devil in an otherwise shy, gentleman patient.

An unwanted pregnancy results in an abandoned child as Terri and Peter are forced to put a young girl's emotional health at risk in order to save the life of her newborn baby. Angie continues to be a presence in Jared's life and surprises him by landing a job at All Saints as a cleaner on Ward 17 — much to Von's disgust. Stephanie confronts Ben, accusing him of having an affair.

The arrival of two high-dependency patients from the Intensive Care Unit and an incompetent agency nurse increase the stress and workload in Ward 17. Despite his reassurances to Terri, Peter has trouble dealing with Raelene Gregson, a difficult patient who he blames for setting in motion the events leading up to his wife's death. Von feels betrayed when she learns a young woman deceived her about how she contracted her illness. Jared covers for an overworked colleague's mistake but a second error results in him filing an incident report. Bron and Luke's relationship is made public much to their friends' delight.

Meanwhile, an elderly man presents with serious symptoms which turn out to be connected in the most unexpected way. Plus, a young sportswoman appears to have an eating disorder but the truth of her situation proves far more devastating.

Frank is called to the dying Ann-Maree's bedside by Von who is very conscious of the fact that Bart is unable to say good-bye and give her permission to die. Frank tells Bart that he has to put his own needs out of the equation and that this is a battle that can't be won and is about being selfless. His words of advice will resonate with Frank once he realizes the danger his his battle with Admin is putting the ED in. Dan's plans to propose to Erica are ruined by the frenetic pace of the ED which also causes Erica to make a near fatal mistake when she is called away from an ICU patient for another emergency, causing the ICU patient's near death. Steve and Dan are kept busy in Resus with a patient who has a mysterious abdominal bleed. Jack is occupied by a mysterious Father Paul who he attempts to keep in the Psych Obs room until he can be seen. As the ED comes under more pressure from Admin, Frank makes a decision that will impact on all those around him.

When Matt discovers a dumped baby, little does he realise that he might be accused of being the child's father. Matt's day goes from bad to worse when he learns that he and Kristen are expecting a baby which Kristen may decide not to keep. Terri faces an administrative crisis when a young athlete develops a multi-resistant strain of staph. However, her job is not an easy one as he has adopted an ostrich approach. Bron learns about Bob's long lost ex-lover and sensing she might be able to shed some light on his illness, tries to track her down. Meanwhile, Luke assists in performing a laparotomy on Margaret Quinell. She has several tumours and the consultant is convinced it is terminal cancer. Luke is ordered to break the news to Margaret, even before the results of the biopsy come through. He's surprised however, when Margaret is philosophical about dying, as it means she can join her late husband. Margaret's estranged son David turns up at the hospital unexpectedly, after having lost touch with his mother. Connor finds himself treading a difficult path as he cares for Margaret and tries to help David reconcile with his mother before she dies. Jared is dismayed and angry to find out that Angie is back in the ward. She fell over following an overdose and has a cut to her head. Dr. Wu tells her that he has contracted Hepatitis B and C. In addition to his normal duties, Jared takes care of Angie. However, he takes things too far when he invites her to stay with him and Connor upon her discharge from hospital.

When two victims of an armed robbery are brought in, the All Saints team are pushed to the limit. Already two nurses down, it's all hands on deck. Mike, Charlotte and Gabrielle deal with Rohan, a store owner who has been shot twice during the hold-up. When his condition spirals out of control, Charlotte and Mike debate how to best keep him alive. Meanwhile, the other hold-up victim is medically fine but his mind keeps replaying the hold-up. Steve and Dan assume he's just suffering from shock. But when the real story comes out it catches both of them by surprise and makes Dan reassess how he's dealing with Erica's disappearance. A woman brings in her twenty-five year old son. He's suffering from cellulitis. He also has a mental age of four, caused by a motor vehicle accident twenty years ago. Due to the lack of nurses, Von offers to help Bart for the day. Von quickly takes in the situation — while the cellulitis isn't serious it's clear the mother isn't coping. But can Von provide the extra support the mother needs before she chooses a more drastic solution? Jack, feeling gun-shy after the internal investigation last week, opts to take Triage. Frank is on to him immediately. Jack's lost his nerve. Amy comes in to finalise her resignation, giving Frank the opportunity to restore his relationship with his niece.

Von and Bron deal with two smokers: one, a young woman whose habit has sparked a fire, the other a mature woman whose life-long habit has led to terminal emphysema. Barbara Woods, a girl with Down's Syndrome, returns to Ward 17, this time for a hysterectomy. When Luke realises that she hasn't been properly informed of the consequences, he refuses to operate.

Luke is put through the wringer when a patient deteriorates before his eyes. Jared learns more harsh truths when he finds Angie working as a prostitute. Terri realises that Peter is nowhere near as settled as he appears in the aftermath of his wife Jenny's death. Realising she's not the person to talk to Peter, Terri asks Sophie for her help. While Von has trouble keeping her patients alive, Stephanie is taken aback by a family celebrating the death of a loved one.

Connor is horrified to learn that his rugby hero has been admitted to Ward 17 with stab wounds from his girlfriend. Connor is excited after arranging to look after his idol, but his opinion of the man changes drastically after spending time with him and learning what prompted the attack. Peter keeps vigil at his wife's bedside in ICU in hopeful anticipation of her recovery. Two women with contrasting reasons for being in hospital find themselves sharing a room. Jared reconciles with his ex-fiancée Amanda.

A mother delays her son's urgent brain tumour surgery to allow her time to perform a wican healing ritual. The mother's religious beliefs are an afront to Terri who struggles accuses the woman of using her son to make a political statement. A nervous patient's lucky coin goes missing after his operation. Ben wants to start a family but Stephanie isn't receptive to his planning.

Jared is worried when a new mother rejects her child and when the baby goes missing, the teenage mother becomes the prime suspect. Seeing her possible future self, Von offers encouragement to a retired nurse who is diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. A woman recalls the situation causing her blindness.

Ben saves the life of a drug dealer who is then admitted to Ward 17 where he antagonises Luke whose imprisoned brother he knows. Connor's social life risks affecting his job performance as he challenges Dr Wu on his treatment for a patient. Sophie returns to nursing following her husband's death and is assigned to Ward 17 but Terri has concerns about her wellbeing. Connor agrees to let Jared move in.

Stephanie befriends a drug-dependent intern. A bulimic becomes attracted to Peter.

An old friend from Von's past refuses treatment and causes difficult memories from their time in Vietnam to resurface. A young woman's illness confounds the doctors while Stephanie questions Luke's commitment to helping his patient.

Connor thinks a patient is going through alcoholic withdrawal, Von gives Jared lessons on nursing, and Ward 17 plays host to a nervous bikie's wedding.

Frank's intern program gets off to a shaky start with the ED's newest recruit giving Frank more than he bargained for. Meanwhile, Adam's sent into a spin when his mother turns up wanting to start over and a father and daughter's lives hang in the balance when a weekend away turns to tragedy.

Steve's anger at being unable to help Claire in the aftermath of her rape creates tension with his workmates and patients. A female prisoner who deliberately swallowed a toothbrush for a day out of gaol opens up the past for Claire and Adam in a surprisingly similar way. Mindless violence at a teenagers' soccer match spills into the ED.

A psychotic patient on an Ice rage turns the ED into a danger zone. Frank goes to extreme lengths to uncover the deadly secret he's hiding. But will it be in time? An explosion at a winery puts the MRU's teamwork to the test and sees Jo form a strong bond with a young woman with whom she has much in common. Bart's rejection of Amy lands him in very deep water with Frank who finally gets an insight into Adam's past.

A brutally bashed cabbie and his assailant come face to face in the ED creating a medical mystery for Steve; a Bride arriving in the ED instead of her church inadvertently gets Bart and Amy working together; and Mike has difficulty juggling new directions in both his personal and professional lives.

A high-speed crash at a raceway leaves a young man struggling to cope with the consequences of his actions and Mike questioning the decision he makes to honour a dying patient's wish. Dan's life is gradually returning to a type of normal - until the police arrive wanting to talk to him about Erica. Dan initially buries himself in work afraid they have bad news but eventually relents and disappears with the police. Later, Frank calls Bart into his office with some tragic news that will change the ED forever. It's Jack's last day, but it's not smooth sailing. When a patient loses faith in him, Jack takes a leaf from his replacement's book and gets tough in order to convince the patient to accept life saving treatment.

New nurse Claire is tested on her first day, full time, in the ED. Gabrielle puts Claire to work with a desperately ill, and very difficult patient. Dan prickles against Claire, seeing her as Erica's replacement. With grief from her patient, and from a colleague, it's a tough start. Bart is annoyed when his patient, Roz, admits that she is faking symptoms. But Roz does have a real problem; her husband. She is deeply concerned about her husband, Ken, and his recent very odd behaviour. Ken refuses to admit to a problem. Roz felt this was the only way to get a Doctor to examine him. Bart and Gabrielle soon realise that Ken's behaviour is erratic and that his wife's concerns are well founded. Bart takes his concerns to Frank, who puts the pieces together, and comes up with an appalling and tragic diagnosis. Adam has finished his stint as a locum, and is crashing on Von's couch, not knowing, or caring, where he will go from here, content for the winds to guide him. Von's patience with his attitude has worn paper thin. Dan obsesses over discovering the identity of an anonymous trauma patient. Dealing with a critical patient that has no identity stirs up Dan's anxieties, but also offers him some hope. After turning up in the ED, Juliet asks Mike to accept her as she is. Jack makes a decision about his future, handing in his resignation.

Cody is delivered to the ED after being hit by a car, and what appears to be a fairly straight forward case becomes a medical mystery with the patient declaring his long list of bad luck is the result of a curse. Charlotte's day has started off badly, Zac's still unwell and she's had to call in Rhiannon for the first time to look after him for the day. Charlotte can feel the weight of the world starting to lift off her shoulders but we're left wondering if all is as it seems. Meanwhile, in the ED, Ashleigh, a mother who is completely exhausted by caring for her young son who has recently been diagnosed with autism, is admitted after a collapse. When Ashleigh's husband, Theo, arrives in the ED, it's obvious to all that he's not the supportive partner she most needs. Gabrielle finds herself stretched to the limit when an Agency Nurse fails to show and in her dealing with Sebastian, an optimistic, corporate life coach with an appetite for dangerous sexual practices.

Emily Watson and her brother Robbie are admitted for a kidney transplant. Emily is the donor as Robbie has had reflux nephropathy since he was thirteen and has been on dialysis for most of his adolescence. Steph and Connor, who are assigned to them, express how brave and selfless Emily is being by giving her brother the ultimate gift. However, Emily down plays her sacrifice, Robbie is the one that is sick not her. Steph and Connor bond with their respective patients but in Connor's case, theres more than a hint of attraction to Emily. All seems set for the transplant and then the ward is stunned when Emily walks out of the hospital leaving a distraught Robbie behind. Connor is amazed to find Emily at Cougar's later the same night. She explains the reason behind her departure was that all her life shes been the dutiful daughter who did what was expected of her. Now she is putting number one first. Connor points out, by drawing parallels with his own brother, that being the favourite sibling, isn't always the easy ride that it seems. He also tells Emily that she has to be nil-by-mouth by midnight, if she drinks her glass of wine the op will be cancelled anyway. Rachel McMahon, an incredibly fit triathlete, is admitted with bone cancer in her upper arms. She is to have a forequarter amputation, a devastating operation for anyone but even more so, for an elite athlete. Bron is dismayed, she always seems to get the basket cases. To everyone's surprise, however, Rachel is handling things surprisingly well, using her sporting philosophy to help her cope. Peter expresses his doubts to Terri about her bravado, he realises that it's a defence mechanism. Rachel and Bron, bond and Bron attends Rachel "arm off" party. Despite initial misgivings, Bron thinks that Rachel can handle anything that is thrown at her. After the operation, however, it is a different story. Rachel is a mess, having phantom limb pains and is inconsolable about the loss of her arm. It becomes Bron's responsibility to help her.

Connor becomes Acting NUM when Steph is uncharacteristically late for the morning shift. Anxiety mounts as the morning wears on. Ben and Bron meanwhile, arrive on the scene of a terrible car smash to discover with horror that Steph is the critically injured driver of one of the cars. Bron is forced to take command of on-site medical assistance as Ben becomes paralysed by fear and anguish. His anger erupts in violence against the bewildered drunken driver of the other car and he has to be pulled off by the arresting police. Relieved by the Police Rescue Squad and a second team of paramedics, Ben sits with his wife, coaxing her to remain conscious, urging her to hang on

When Ben and Bron answer a cry for help they find a woman, Lynette Newman, living in a sealed flat, under rigidly sterile conditions. A fall has given Lynette head injuries and she is transferred to All Saints and ultimately to Ward 17. She displays a paranoid fear of being there, and what appears to be a obsessive/compulsive disorder. Connor, currently Acting NUM, wants Lynette transferred to the Psych unit. Mitch suspects there is more to it and insists Lynette remain on the ward.

Bron is nurse in charge for the night shift on Ward 17. Von isn't too impressed when Bron tries to delegate all the work to her and agency nurse Amanda but Bron is forced to take on responsibility for an elderly nun. Sister Frances is desperately confused, constantly asking for the nurses to contact another Sister who, Bron learns, died twenty years ago.

The big day has finally arrived for Mitch and Rose but despite the best efforts of the Ward 17 staff, Mitch becomes involved with a patient suffering chronic pain as a result of the condition Ankylosing Spondylitis. The young man, Scott, has just about given up but Mitch has a radical idea on how to break the pain cycle. Connor is less than impressed to learn Mitch intends to bring dope onto the ward, particularly when he has worked so hard to be a good NUM. Mitch finds an unlikely ally in treating Scott, when Rose takes time out of her wedding day preparations to lend a hand.

When two children are killed by a drunk driver, their mother's grief unlocks another woman's secret and is the catalyst for Ben finally venting his anger over losing Steph. Meanwhile, Jared volunteers to look after Brittany Finlay, the new student nurse. He expects a nervous newcomer but instead is faced with an obnoxious and outspoken young woman.

Bron is worried about Ben. He has slumped into a depression since Steph's death and she is concerned he is not taking adequate care of himself. So concerned, in fact she has temporarily moved into his flat to keep an eye on him. Which is where Ben drops his bombshell; he has decided to transfer from active paramedic duties to a desk job at HQ. Bron is aghast. She knows this is an ill-considered decision borne of his depression, but Ben won't hear reason. He is quitting just as soon as he finishes the paperwork.

Brittany, under Jared's wing, has a "coming of age" working experience when Ian, an alcoholic lecturer with liver damage, and Lee, a car accident victim with a drinking habit are brought together in Room Four. Brittany develops a crush on Lee and goes so far as to kiss him. Jared spies them both and educates her on the need to separate her work from play. Brittany takes no heed until Jared forces her to do her normal nursing duties and help Lee with his toiletry. The lesson is a sorry one for romance and earns Jared Brittany's resentment.

Terri settles a dazed Robyn Michalandos on Ward 17 but is immediately suspicious. Robyn insists her head injuries are from a fall down the stairs at home but all the signs point towards domestic violence. When her husband Steve arrives and immediately threatens his teenage stepson, the fears of the staff are seemingly confirmed. The stage is set for a tense day on the Ward.

Bron and Ben rescue Patti Burke from a snap freezer. The woman had gone in to save her friend Jill, who appears to have wanted to commit suicide, and in so doing Patti ended up bound to her friend's hand. Unable to separate Patti from her dead friend, Ben and Bron have to wait until the shelf to which Jill is attached, is cut away. Then, Patti (still attached to the corpse) is able to be taken to All Saints. It is up to Luke, with Kylie now as his observer, to separate the two women surgically. But the scars left on Patti are not just physical. Emotionally, she carries a guilt, which goes deeper than mere survivor's guilt. Once she admits to Jared she and Jill were lovers, we sense she will be able to heal.

Jared's beloved grandmother accuses him of nursing a war criminal. The situation brings Jared to gain a personal understanding of the holocaust and his heritage as a Jew. Rose becomes suspicious of something going on between Mitch and Terri. Jodi Horner starts on the ward as the new clerk and Connor does his best to try and impress her. But it is Connor who's impressed by a patient who is rehearsing a swallowing act for a freak circus show.

Luke and the hospital are manipulated into agreeing to operate on a man who wants to die so his body can be cryogenically frozen. Bron protects Ben from a flirtatious female jockey but can he save a heavily-endebted Bron from losing a fortune on a horse race? Jared is pushed to find a solution for a young boy trying to pass his HSC while suffering from a painful condition. Jodi surprises everyone.

Bron's desperation to pay back her gambling debt to Luke intensifies when she is stuck nursing one of his patients, a woman in dire straits with chronic back pain and a resentful teenage daughter. Mitch and Jared nurse a young man who will do anything to make himself more masculine — even if it kills him. Ben and his partner must try and calm down a lottery winner with suicidal tendencies and Von finds herself in an awkward situation while caring for a fellow nurse.

Luke, Bron, and Ben must overcome their personal differences in a cliff-side battle to save a young man's life. Von believes a young male patient with cancer needs help from a different kind of specialist when she determines he is mimicking symptoms to get attention from his parents who are proccupied with his cancer-fighting sister. Mitch cares for a married woman who wants to keep her diagnosis from her husband. A clumsy painter keeps the staff on their toes. Connor rides a rollercoaster as he tries to follow the tangled personal lives of a patient and her husband. Jodi shares some startling news prompting Connor to tell Bron the truth about his feelings for her.

Between heavy labour pains, Rose shocks Mitch by demanding to know what caused his break-up with Terri more than a decade ago. The sad truth is he really doesn't know the answer. When Rose suffers complications, Mitch and Terri are left holding the baby. Mitch decides it's time to confront Terri and asks her what went wrong with their love affair. Meanwhile, Ben and Bron bring in a patient suffering from progressive dementia, Jared rejects Kylie's generous gift, and Luke is called on to make good on an old debt.

While Ben and his new partner, Scott are trapped in the path of a deadly blaze, the hospital staff are crying out for a cool change. Terri makes a big decision about her future while nursing a man with severe burn injuries and Connor finds it difficult working with Bron after his attempt to woo her fails.

In the late stages of a terminal disease and 38 weeks pregnant, Sarah wants to go home to organise her daughter's fifth birthday party. When she goes into labour in the ambulance, a battle ensues to keep mother and baby alive. Jared is forced to make a decision about his career. Connor, Bron and Kylie prepare to celebrate Jared's birthday.

Mitch diagnoses a gifted ballerina with scoliosis, forcing her to make a choice between her health and a career. Bron is looking after Brett Addison, a former patient who is booked in for spinal surgery. Connor surprises Jodi with flowers and finds her reaction not at all what he expected.

During her care, Mitch and Connor discover the case is more complex than initially thought. Luke comes into conflict with Claudia following the death of a recently-discharged patient. Meanwhile, Jodi finally breaks her moody silence.

Mitch is forced to realise he is not so different from a hypertensive potential stroke victim whose high-risk condition is largely caused by work, diet and lack of exercise. Connor defies a senior surgeon. Ben comes to the rescue of a timid, slow young man.

Ian Hanrahan arrives to undergo corrective surgery for a minor hernia. However, things do go badly wrong when Ian has a completely unforeseen reaction to the anesthetic. Ian comes out of the routine operation in a vegetative state and there seems to be little hope of any improvement. Ben and Scott are called out to attend a young woman who has collapsed, in extreme pain, at a train station. Meanwhile, Bron is battling with a difficult patient who, despite being discharged, is refusing to leave hospital.

Scott attends his first domestic violence call-out with Ben to find that a girl has been stabbed in the neck by her boyfriend. Scott provokes a fight with him. When Bron is assigned to nurse the girlfriend, it is discovered all is not as it seems. Mitch diagnoses a young woman with a serious heart condition and tries to reassure her by suggesting they fly in a top surgeon to operate. Kate initially supports the idea, but does a back flip when Claudia goes on the warpath about the cost. Mitch is disgusted believing Kate has sold out.

Terri returns to Ward 17 and is amused to find Mitch's new boss is his former intern Malcolm Pussle, who once had a huge crush on her. Connor's mate, former Ward Clerk Tony Hurst, returns from the States after being dumped by his American boyfriend and is destroying himself with drugs and alcohol. When he has a respiratory arrest, he is admitted to All Saints, and Connor tries to persuade Tony that people do care for him. Mitch clashes with Malcolm over treatment of a young man who believes he is a vampire. Bron nurses Vietnam veteran Brian Douglas who, after surviving prostate cancer, caused by exposure to Agent Orange, wants to march with his mates on ANZAC day. Mitch has to break the sad news his cancer has returned and he doesn't have long to live.

When two teenagers are brought onto the ward after a home-made bomb explodes at a State Boy's Home, their different attitudes lead to a number of wrong conclusions being drawn. Bron is frustrated nursing a developmentally delayed young woman with an unquenchable thirst who will only listen to instructions from Mitch. Jared searches the ward for a mouse unaware it belongs to a patient, sort of. Rose returns to work, with the added emotional stress of leaving her baby in the crèche for the first time.

Things are typically hectic in Ward 17 as Kylie is involved in a car accident after the end of a protracted stint at the hospital. After suffering minor injuries, Kylie struggles to treat the driver of the other car. Bron is nursing 16-year-old Jacqui Henderson, a fit, young runner who collapsed while jogging to school. Mitch soon discovers Jacqui has pericarditis — heart disease. It is unusual in someone Jacqui's age, especially as she is so fit. Meanwhile, Terri must deal with a patient's unbroken repetition of the same song but after getting the elderly woman to stop singing, her condition rapidly deteriorates.

Bron and her patient, a self-help motivationalist, both have an influence on each other's lives and Bron's relationship with Ben takes an unexpected turn. Ben treats a man who is drinking himself to death and finds himself remembering Stephanie — wondering if it is time he moved on. Terri and Mitch fight for the rights of a hunger striker who claims to be a victim of political oppression.

It is the morning after their first night together and Ben and Bron both find themselves wondering if they have done the right thing. Ben and Scott are called out to a suburban house where a young father, Jack, has accidentally backed his 4WD over his toddler and killed him. Bron nurses Jack on his arrival on Ward 17 and finds her own fears mirrored in his behaviour. Mitch is mightily unimpressed to find Malcolm Pussle back in his life when a patient comes in and is quickly diagnosed as having an aneurysm. Von and Kylie are shocked to discover their new patient uses dressing and being treated as a baby as a way of coping with stress. Kylie is trying hard to convince Jared she is ready to come back to work after the accident but his concern for her is almost suffocating.

Mitch diagnoses a strong-willed bag-lady with severe gangrene. When she rejects medical attention, Mitch finds it hard to respect her decision to return to a life on the streets because it means certain death. Bron nurses Steve, a young Australian backpacker who has lived with epilepsy for most of his life. After a failed lunch date Ben finally catches up with Bron. Jared arrives at work to discover the medical fundraiser calendar in which he appears near-naked has gone on sale.

Bron, happily in love, clashes with a grumpy old patient who is ungrateful for having his life saved. Von takes over nursing him with the idea that her grumpiness will suit the old bloke better but he is a hard case. Terri agrees to go on a date with Malcolm Pussle. It has been more than a decade since she has been on a date and she is excited and incredibly nervous. They have a lovely evening but Terri is still apprehensive about how the evening will end… she is relieved when Malcolm is happy to part with a goodnight kiss. Knowing that Malcolm is happy not to rush things allows Terri to relax and begin to enjoy the romance even more. Everyone on Ward 17 can see how happy Terri is and even Mitch decides to make the effort to be nicer to Malcolm. Perhaps he can start by calling him Dr. Pussle instead of Dr. Pustule.

Ben and Scott receive a call-out to a low security prison and arrive to find a siege in progress with a guard, a nurse, and another inmate hostage in the prison clinic. Connor's day does not start well when a post-op patient pleads to be allowed out of bed and subsequently falls over — Luke then becomes irate at Connor's apparent lack of patient care. After nursing a life coach, Connor also starts to examine his own life. Terri reveals to Von that she is worried Dr. Pussle will want to progress the relationship faster than she can handle.

Luke is cornered into letting his brother Rick stay at the flat after he is released from jail. When Father Francis Tyler is admitted in an emaciated state, Mitch diagnoses Beri-beri but suspects the Father to be alcoholic and suffering from the more serious condition of Wernicke's Encephalopathy. There is a carnival atmosphere in the carpark where a group of bikers are holding a charity event for the Children's Ward. Bron decides to go on the Pill and has an appointment at the Staff Clinic for a check up and prescription. It is Kylie's big day in court and Jared is determined to accompany her. When she is awarded 60 hours community service and complains that it is not enough, Jared refuses to be party to her self-flagellation. A newborn baby, found on the Ward, holds the key to a secret shame.

Von never makes it to the charity ball when her little friend Zac's condition begins to deteriorate. Terri and Malcolm bond at the ball but Terri is shocked to discover Rose suffers from bi-polar. The revelation causes problems between Mitch and Rose. Kylie drinks too much, Scott puts more moves on Andrea and Luke's date is horribly raped outside the ball venue. Meanwhile, Connor and Bron are on night shift in Ward 17.

On a day when the stars seem to be coming true, Connor tries his luck with love and Bron takes a gamble, which ends up being one of the worst mistakes of her life. However, for two of their patients the stars come through with their predictions of love and fortune.

Mitch faces a double crisis that threatens his professional future when the legal fallout arrives from giving a patient marijuana. Bron battles to save her relationship with Ben after her gambling relapse. Connor's life may be forever changed after receiving an amazing gift from a former patient but it is a current patient that helps put things in perspective. Bron nurses a young woman who struggles with disclosing the details of her illness to the staff. The ambo's bring in a man whose wife tries to coverup the cause of his injuries and find themselves in the middle of an unlikely love triangle.

Mitch is struggling with his marriage, and faces up to a woman who is wrongly told that her husband has died. A visit from the Minister of Health throws Luke into a nasty situation when an organ donor's secret is discovered.

Pussle and Terri's future together is uncertain after Mitch and Pussle's arguments over a patient force their mutual jealousy over Terri out into the open.

Scott is put to the test when Ben blacks out on the job. An emotionally distraught Bron then puts Ben's life at risk by undermining Luke's confidence before surgery. A man's life is thrown into turmoil when told he is terminally ill, only to later discover that there was a mix-up and he isn't going to die.

Mitch and Roses' relationship reaches a crisis when Mitch no longer responds to his wife's manipulations.

Connor is speechless when he bumps into Jodi pole-dancing in a club. Terri finds another nurse rape victim and to Von's surprise, the battle-axe she is nursing turns out to have the key to soothing the rape victim's pain. Mitch is driven mad by Rose's mother. While Terri would love to help, Mitch makes it clear that she's the last person who can do so. Luke pulls off a tricky operation.

Mitch and Luke fight to save the life of a bride caught in a car crash, and there are echoes of wedding bells in Ward 17. Meanwhile, it's Mitch and Rose's first anniversary party, and everyone's invited - except for Terri.

Rose leaves baby Lucy at home alone and is later found playing on a swing in a park at midnight in the pouring rain. After a frightening night of Rose's behaviour, a confused and extremely worried Mitch turns to marriage counselling. The strain is showing, particularly in Mitch's unusually gruff treatment of patients. Bron is stalked and then trapped by the nurse-rapist in the hospital boiler room. With no way out, she knows she must fight for her life. Ben finds the tragic results of a three-year-old boy who was left alone while his mum played the poker machines. Shaken by a distressing day at work, Ben is late in picking up Bron, only to find her missing. Luke and Terri are confronted with the horrifically cruel results of a school initiation.

Von is nursing a terminal patient, a cross-dresser who wants to go out in style, but his wife doesn't know about her husband's secret. Ben vows to find and destroy the rapist who nearly got Bron. Kylie Preece finally stands up to Dr Murphy. Lyle accidentally throws out a patient's thyroid gland.

The rapist strikes again, kidnapping Bron and leaving a young nurse dead. In mortal danger, Bron is shocked when she discovers the identity of the serial rapist. Ward 17 is threatened with quarantine after a breakout of golden staph. Luke is forbidden to operate on patients after being suspected as a carrier.

Rebecca and Scott are called out to a bombing site where an accident leads to Rebecca being seriously injured and Scott realising he has feelings for her. Ben plans to propose to Bron on a picnic he organised, but things do not turn out as expected. Mitch informs a patient's husband that he must choose between his wife and his unborn child. Luke is moved by a new and innovative way to treat a Parkinson's patient. Terri learns the truth about Malcolm's secret, leading them to make a life-changing decision.

It's business as usual, in Ward, as Bron heads off to help Lyle through his ""opening night"" nerves. But the best laid plans go horribly wrong when an earthquake set of events, including a train disaster in which one of the team from Ward 17 dies.

Terri discovers Bron isn't coping with the tragic loss of Lyle, and Nelson is harbouring a dark and personal secret that unexpectedly reveals itself.

Rumours circulate Ward 17 that Von is having an affair with one of her patients. Terri is placed in difficult position when Mitch admits Rose's mother, Victoria, with a suspected heart condition.

Mitch finds that he is up against formidable opposition, with his proposal to set up a herion detox centre and puts Terri offside with his desperate actions. Von makes an unusual discovery on a patient convinced he is 'hexed' by his ex-girlfriend.

Mitch makes a decision to tack a NDA test and fight for custody for Lucy. It's also the first day for treatment in his new Detox Clinic. Von is attacked by Adam because of her interference with his horron addicted mum.

It's crunch time for Bron as she finally plans to tell her fiance', Ben, that she had an affair with another man. A dark shadow emerges over their marriage. Terri's wish for more romance in her relationship gives Mitch the cheeky idea to plan her a surprise romantic dinner - in her office.

Terri can't hide the news from Mitch any longer... she is pregnant and unsure of how Mitch is going to take the surprise. With only seven days until their wedding, Bron is desperate to repair her relationship but delivers an unexpected announcement. Nelson has hots for the new Ward 17 doctor Charlotte, and asks her out on a date which turns into a shocking revelation.

Paula is forced to consider medicating her son Max to ease his behavioural problems, after he hijacks an ambulace. With their first baby on the way, Terri and Mitch decide it's time to move in together... and they soon find the perfect home.

Jared's personal crusade to save herion addicts living in the underground take a tragic turn when he loses one to an overdose. Kylie realises how empty her life outside work is when she treats a man completely at peace with the fact that he is dying of cancer.

Jared is ambushed and sexually assaulted. Terri knows the sex of the baby - and Mitch will bribe anyone to know too. Dr Warwick Ellies cuts himself during an operation an a transsexual patient and is convinced that he might have been exposed to HIV.

A young ballet dancer, divides the Ward when Paula wants to use restrains after she becomes violent, as a result of suffering withdrawals from pain killing medication.
